RAP & I volunteered for 'No on 8' tonight, calling voters to discuss the proposition. I've never done anything like that before, and it was very intimidating to start. We had a sheet of course. "No, this won't force your kids to learn about gay marriage in school." "No, churches won't be forced to perform gay marriages." Etc... No conversation ever got that far, for me.
But between us and the 20 other people there, the No responses outweighed the Yes 8:1. A good percentage of the 'decline to state' were undoubtedly Yeses, but it was interesting to see the reaction of people in the 650 & 408 area codes. Only one guy was hostile to me. He asked if I was kidding, and if I really wanted to promote my lifestyle. What's interesting about this campaign, the dedicated volunteers tell me, is actually how strong the non-gay support is (at least around here).
I don't think I helped anybody decide. Other peoples' experience paid more direct benefits, and at least I contributed by working through the lists so our little group could make the 3000 calls we made tonight and make the difference we made.

I'm proud of you for volunteering! Got to admit that my participation is at an all time low- though I did vote No on 8. I've never understood what people get out of prohibiting gays and lesbians from being married. It can't purely be a religious objection- because no one is forcing a church to perform gay marriages. I guess it's just the good old hate someone so you can feel better about yourself.
