Photo class

CMS got me a camera for Christmas 2007, in anticipation of having a kid and wanting to learn how to take good pics of said kid.

In August, I began a semester-long course in photography called "Visual Perception". It's great in that it addresses the basics of photography, while focusing on composition.

I turned in my first assignment last week, demonstrating depth of field. We were to show an example of shallow depth of field and great depth of field. I wanted to get a photo of the same subject with different depths of field. The assignment was useful in that it really got me to working with manual settings on my camera, and working my way around things such as the aperture. I wasn't particularly fond of the subject of my photos, other than I like the color and shape of the flowers. I had tried other photos/subjects/times, but was largely unsuccessful because I didn't have the lighting I wanted. The entire week before the photos were due were overcast.

Details for these photos: for the shallow depth of field, I used a telephoto lens to increase the focal length, maintaining aperture and distance to subject constant; for the great depth of field, I used a wide-angle lens to decrease the focal length.

My next assignment is to submit four photos, each focusing of one of the following areas: curve, pattern, color, and shadow.
